«My motherland: the place where I live/ the place I love the most»
I was born and live in the small town Kiliya of Odessa region, which is situated on the banks of the river Danube. The town is the administrative center of Kiliya district. The town is located 47 kilometers from the Black Sea, it has a population of about 30 thousand people.
According to the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine 2001 «On approval of the list of historical settlements of Ukraine» Kiliya is the oldest city in our country. Greek colony was found there in the 8th century BC.
In ancient times the city had another name – Likostoma, which gave Kiliya ancient Greeks, which means «wolf's mouth». This name is associated with dangerous tides and circles of the most turbid river of Europe. Second name Kiliya is Achilles or Akiliya. Ancient legend claims that the town was so-called in honor of his ancestor Achilles demigod Alexander Macedonian, the king of Macedonia and Greece that arrived here on ships.
During the period of its existence, the town belonged to different countries. It was a Turkish city with mosques, stone baths and bazaars, it belonged to the Principality of Moldova, was converted into a military fortress with the Orthodox churches, it is passed to the gendarmerie of Romania, belonged to Royal Russia.
Now Kiliya is the largest Ukraine’s center of the rice cultivation. Rice fields stretch for miles along the Danube, which, unfortunately, has led to increased groundwater. The town has shipbuilding and ship – repairing factory, wine factory, meat — dairy factory, river port and other enterprises.
Our town is famous for its temples and churches. Here are the semi-underground temple of St. Nicholas, St. Basil's Cathedral, St. Demetrius Church and old belief Pokrov Church (the largest in the Odessa region).
However, the greatest ornament of the town is its hard working, sincere and cheerful people.
